What is Going On at GNLP this HOLY WEEK

Here’s HOLY WEEK
Just a quick note to remind everyone it is HOLY WEEK and things are really rolling here at the Geeseytown-Newry Lutheran Parish.

We stared off this week with what I thought was great attendance at our Palm/Passion Sunday Services this past week. Thank you to all who went along with the Pastor’s crazy idea to start a palm procession outside on a not too warm Pennsylvania morning. On one hand we were able to stand outside and be a visible witness to the world of our worship and the work of Christ in our midst. On the other hand we learned, at least at Geeseytown, that next year we should probably start further down in the parking lot. I’m sure we were a powerful witnesses to the truckers screaming by on 22, but it did make it more difficult to hear didn’t it? 

Please remember that we have lots of services this coming week. Maundy Thursday will be at Newry at 7pm on April 1 (no foolin’). We will be doing the traditional liturgy for Maundy Thursday which will include the pastor washing the feet of anyone who wishes to participate. We will also have Holy Communion and the stripping of the altar.

Friday we will have our Good Friday Tenebrae Service at Geeseytown at 7pm. This is the “service of darkness” which John’s account of our Lord’s passion, penitential hymns, and the gradual extinguishing of the lights to leave us with the feeling of being in the tomb. If you have not have the experience of the Tenebrae Service, I would invite you to please do your best to attend. It is a very powerful and moving service.

Saturday we will be doing something new this year. In place of our usual Saturday night 6pm liturgy at Newry, we will be doing the first half of the Easter Vigil. This will be a service of readings from the Old Testament and responses which help us to see the way which God has (before the incarnation of Christ) been working to save, reconcile, and call all creation to himself. This is a more quiet meditative service.

EASTER SUNDAY will begin with at 6:30am Sunrise service at Geeseytown. This will be followed by an Easter Breakfast which will begin around 7:30am. Easter Festival Services will also be held that morning at Newry at 8:30am and at Geeseytown at 10:15am.

This Easter we also will be celebrating the baptism of three new members into the body of Christ. We also will be having several of our younger members receiving their first communion. It will be a day to celebrate.

I hope God will continue to bless you this week, and may the Peace of Christ which Passes All Understanding be With you Always.

Blessings to you on this Week of Weeks.
In Hope of the Risen Christ
Pastor Mike
